The Adventure of the Shoscombe Old House Blog

The Adventure of the Shoscombe Old Place by Arthur Conan Doyle is about a man named Robert Norberton. He thinks his employee has lost his mind. He says all the things he does are odd. He thinks the horse and the big derby coming up have made him crazy. He is with the horse when he is supposed to be sleeping. Later in the story, they find out he gave away his sister’s dog. She loved her spaniel but he gave it away and they even have an idea that he killed the dog. At the end of the story, the horse wins, Norberton gets 80,000 pounds, and he has a better life than ever before. It wasn’t the best ending for such a bad person like Norberton. I think this story was not good at the ending because such a bad person like Norberton, ended up having a better life than before he killed the dog. I think Norberton is weird because he gave away his sister’s dog. I don’t think that is normal if it is just barking outside his window. I would have let it in if I knew it and let it sleep in the house for the night. This is the second Sherlock Holmes short story that I have read that has the original person be the villain. It happened with Josiah Amberley in the Retired Colourman. I don’t get why the person in this story would want to kill a dog. Especially his sister’s dog. It was a very rare dog too. In the beginning, it looks like they were working on a different case with glue and wood. I think this is weird because they get piled up with cases and they are all on the same day sometimes. I think it is not good that Norberton not only got away for what he did, but he also won the race and got a load of money. It wasn’t a good fit for what he did before the race. In my opinion, that will just make him want to do more of the same thing like killing dogs. It is like getting put in jail for killing someone, but then you get let out and the police give you all their money and make you rich. I love dogs, and if I was in a situation of a guy killing a dog, I would call the police and throw him in jail unlike Sherlock.
